چکیده

Oxidative stress is well known to be involved in the pathogenesis of lifestyle-related diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic diseases, and malignancies. Oxidative stress has been defined as harmful because oxygen free radicals attack biological molecules such as lipids, proteins, and DNA. However, oxidative stress also has a useful role in physiologic adaptation and in the regulation of intracellular signal transduction. Therefore, a more useful definition of oxidative stress may be “a state where oxidative forces exceed the antioxidant systems due to loss of the balance between them.” The biomarkers that can be used to assess oxidative stress in vivo have been attracting interest because the accurate measurement of such stress is necessary for investigation of its role in lifestyle diseases as well as to evaluate the efficacy of treatment. Many markers of oxidative stress have been proposed, including lipid hydroperoxides, 4-hydroxynonenal, isoprostan, 8-hydroxyguanine, and ubiquinol-10. To prevent the development of lifestyle diseases, advice on how to lead a healthy life should be given to individuals based on the levels of oxidant and antioxidant activity assessed by pertinent biomarkers. Individual genetic information should also be taken into consideration.

Metal ions and oxidative protein modification in neurological disease.

This review highlights the role of oxidative stress and imbalances in metal ion homeostasis in the neurodegenerative diseases Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease and in the progressive demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis. The chemistry and biochemistry of oxidative stress-induced protein damage are first described, followed by the evidence for a pathological role of oxidative stres...

Alzheimer Disease and Oxidative Stress

Research in Alzheimer disease has recently demonstrated compelling evidence on the importance of oxidative processes in its pathogenesis. Cellular changes show that oxidative stress is an event that precedes the appearance of the hallmark pathologies of the disease, neurofibrillary tangles, and senile plaques. While it is still unclear what the initial source of the oxidative stress is in Alzhe...

Oxidative Stress and Human Disease: a Review

Background: The human body needs both types of oxidants (free radicals) and antioxidants for normal metabolism, signal transduction mechanism, and the order of cellular activity. Free radicals can be either harmful or helpful to the body, in fact, they play a dual role as both toxic and beneficial compounds. The human body has the natural antioxidant defense mechanism to counteract the free rad...

Role of Oxidative Stress in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common causes of infertility. 6 to 8 percent of women of childbearing age have this endocrine disorder. Biochemical abnormalities in these patients lead to imbalance of female hormones and increased androgens, which can have consequences such as menstrual cycle disorder, hirsutism, acne vulgaris and androgenic alopecia. Despite the long...

Oxidative Stress Associated with Neuronal Apoptosis in Experimental Models of Epilepsy

Epilepsy is considered one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide. Oxidative stress produced by free radicals may play a role in the initiation and progression of epilepsy; the changes in the mitochondrial and the oxidative stress state can lead mechanism associated with neuronal death pathway. Bioenergetics state failure and impaired mitochondrial function include excessive free r...

P-58: BSO-Induced Oxidative Stress Affects Testicular Ultrastructure, Levels of Oxidative Markers, Testosterone and Sperm Fertility

Background: GSH is the main intracellular antioxidant and its level is important for protecting cell from oxidative stress. BSO inhibits GSH synthesis and cause oxidative stress. The study is designed to investigate the effect of BSO induced oxidative stress on testicular histology, semen parameters and sperm fertility. Materials and Methods: The adult male mice were divided into two groups of ...
